ORTHODONTICS BRACES

  1. Dental Braces
  • Braces are orthodontic devices that straighten crooked and misaligned teeth
  • Dental braces are used for both aesthetic and functional reasons, not only to correct a patient’s smile but also to realign their jaw
  • Braces are available for people of all ages. Although, children between 10 and 16 years of age are the most common age group to get treatment.
  • Orthodontic treatment is different for every patient depending on their needs, jaw and teeth structure, and age.
  • The most popular types of dental braces use brackets, which are small, square-shaped pieces of metal or ceramic: Metal braces, Auto metal Braces, Ceramic braces, Auto metal braces… Clear Braces.
  • Main components of braces that connect together to realign teeth and create a healthier smile over time, including: Braces, Archwire, Elastic Ligature, Chain Elastic, Wire Ligature, Coil, Rubber Band…Also: Mini Implant (If needed).

  • Consultation (First Appointment):

+ The Orthodontist checkup

+ X-rays are taken of the patient’s mouth, Taking some photo and custom molds are made (The impressions)

Take CT Conebeam 3D

+ The Orthodontist recommends the best treatment option depending on individual needs.

+ The Orthodontist treatment plan for you.

Teeth must be deep cleaned by a dentist before braces are placed. If other oral care treatments are needed, such as periodontal disease treatment, cavity fillings, or tooth extractions, they should be completed before orthodontic treatment as well.

  • Placement of Braces (Second Appointment):

+ Cleaning and Polishing

+ The bonding appointment takes about 1 hour: The orthodontist dries the patient’s teeth, places the braces on using a special adhesive, hardens the adhesive with a curing light, and sets the bond. Finally, the orthodontist runs the archwire through the brackets and applies the ligature to keep all of the materials in place.

+ Extraction small molar tooth (If needed)

+ Fix mini implant (If needed)

Mini Implant for Braces

+ Within five to eight weeks after placement, the first follow-up appointment is scheduled. The orthodontist routinely swaps out elastics and archwires to ensure the teeth are moving in the right direction. A patient visits their orthodontist every five to eight weeks until the braces are removed. Braces are left on for 18 months to three years.

  • Last Appointment:

+ The braces taken out and corresponding materials come off easily (The orthodontist first removes the bonding adhesive, brackets, wire, and elastics)

+ The enamel is cleaned

+ Finally, a permanent or removable retainer (mouthguard) is created to ensure the patient’s teeth stay in place. Retainers should be worn every night while sleeping to ensure malocclusion does not recur over time.

  • After Care:

    After Care for Braces

+ While braces are in place, paying extra attention to oral care practices is essential to see the best results.

+ Flossing and brushing are recommended after every meal. This ensures food, debris, and bacteria do not get stuck between the brackets and cause more serious dental conditions.

  1. Pros and Cons of Braces:

Pros:

  • Versatile — with braces, it does not matter how challenging your case is. Braces can fix multiple dental and facial problems that need correcting. They are the most effective treatment method in shifting crooked teeth into the correct position.
  • Perfect results — traditional braces can often achieve a better result than Invisalign.
  • Choice — there are various types of braces to choose from. Patients can now choose ceramic or lingual braces that are more discreet than metal options.
  • Treatment time — when closing gaps and aligning the teeth, the braces treatment time can be quicker than Invisalign.

     Cons:

  • Aesthetics — many people dislike the look of traditional braces. They can make some people feel more conscious of their appearance, especially in social settings.
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene — brushing and flossing your teeth is more challenging with braces. If you do not clean your teeth effectively, you risk plaque build up around the braces. This can lead to staining and tooth decay. Patients must always follow their orthodontist’s guidance on how to brush and floss while wearing braces correctly.
  • Diet and food preparation — patients must be careful when it comes to eating certain foods and drinks. Hard and sticky dishes can lead the archwire or a bracket to break or dislodge from a tooth. If this occurs, the braces will not work until the breakage is fixed.
  • Regular consultations — braces require more frequent visits to the orthodontist to check on progress. Patients must visit their orthodontists around once per month to have their teeth checked.
  1. Instructions And Aftercare Following Orthodontic Treatment:

Cleaning every 6 months for Orthodontics
  • Hygiene: Brush your teeth, gums braces and wires thoroughly after each meal and before going to bed. We recommend that you carry around a travel toothbrush. Poor oral hygienecan result in puffy, bleeding gums and permanent white spots on teeth. Inflammation and bleeding gums will delay your treatment. An interproximal brush is the best way to clean around your braces and can be purchased from reception; a demonstration will be given at your hygiene appointment. Use this brush between your teeth at the gum line. We do reserve the right to suspend or delay treatment if your oral hygiene is poor. Please keep your teeth and braces clean.
  • Hard Food: Do not eat hard food such as popcorn, ice, boiled sweets, hard crusts etc. Those foods can break the brackets. Cut up foods such as meats, apples, carrots etc before eating them. Remember to eat sensibly when wearing a brace.
  • Eating Habits
  • Nothing sticky, gummy, chewy or hard. Examples:
  • No gum, caramels, taffy or whole bagels.
  • No popcorn, nuts or ice cubes.
  • Cut raw fruits and vegetables into sections.
  • Cut corn off the cob.
  • Don’t bite into chicken or ribs on the bone.

  • Coloured Foods: Some foods/drinks will stain the elastics on your braces, so try to avoid any foods/drinks with strong colourings for example tomato based foods, curries, coffee and tea, it’s advisable to have these kinds of things perhaps the day before your next visit, as we can always change your stained elastics to new clear ones.
  • Soreness: After the braces are put on the teeth they may be sore, usually for the first 2-4 days. Ibuprofen or paracetamol may be taken to relieve this. If the soreness continues even after eating soft food, please phone for an appointment so any necessary adjustments can be made. If the inside of the lips or generally the soft tissue areas are sore, the wax provided can be used as a cushion over the braces until the lips become accustomed. Taking painkillers prior to your adjustment appointments can help minimise the discomfort.
  • You may experience some pressure and discomfort on your teeth.
  • Be gentle with braces and avoid chewing hard and/or sticky food.
  • Brushing and flossing around braces is sometimes challenging and time consuming, but very important.
  • Jaw Joint: There are some patients who will develop popping/clicking or other problems in their jaw joint during or after orthodontic treatment. This is very rare. Usually, orthodontic treatment provides a positive effect on the jaw joint. You should understand that pre-existing joint conditions can manifest as a popping or clicking after orthodontic treatment but orthodontic treatment by itself has not been shown to cause popping/clicking of the jaw joints.
  • Cleanings: You will get three hygienist appointments for a professional clean and home care advice during your treatment. If you have an appointment for a cleaning scheduled, keep it! This is not required but highly encouraged.
  • What if I get problems?Problems with fixed braces are unusual. However, if anything happens that makes the brace very uncomfortable and cannot be controlled using the remedies recommended above, or you notice that it is broken, please call us and ask for an appointment. If a bracket or the wire starts to cause any discomfort, just apply the orthodontic wax as demonstrated.
  • Smile Care Pack: Contains a packet of interproximal brushes, Interspace Toothbrush, Soft/Ortho Toothbrush, Orthodontic wax and a bottle of Fluoriguard mouthwash. This pack is complementary.
